It was a Sunday afternoon and the warmth of the sun was a gift to the day. Grace stepped out onto the patio and settled into a chair with cushions that shared the shade of green displayed by the cascading foliage of her Boston ferns.
The Boston ferns provided a natural privacy screen. One side of the patio spilled onto a carpet of ground cover and the other side was bordered by a pair of terra cotta planters. Last year the planters hosted pink and red begonias; this year they hosted metal ornaments in the image of hummingbirds in flight.
Grace gave up her losing battle with chipmunks and squirrels that insisted on digging and spilling the soft potting soil onto her patio. That’s why the terra cotta planter ornaments were now surrounded by a deep layer of brown and tan river rock and not soil. No more soil spill clean-up was her victory.
Grace was surrounded by the familiar sound of chirping from sparrows with nests in secret places that would release a generation of sparrows for next spring. She remembered as a young girl her picture book of birds she used to identify local N.J. birds. Now an adult in Illinois she discovered that the birds were pretty much the same.
Grace’s attention turned back to the sounds of the birds and she remembered another book—a book that chilled her heart. The book, “Silent Spring” was written by Rachel Carson a biologist and science writer who documented the impact of pesticides known to be toxic to people and the environment but used in the U.S. Carson recorded the devastating impact on birds exposed to this toxic pesticide. That spring there were no birds. That spring there was no chirping. That spring there was silence.
But Carson didn’t keep silent. She continued to speak against powerful and influential voices from the chemical industry who had partnered with scientific foundations and government agencies.
Her voice eventually led to the ban of DDT and established regulations on the use of pesticides in the U.S. Carson never lived to see the impact her voice made—she died before the ban and establishment of pesticide regulations. But her voice was heard.
Grace’s thoughts were drawn by a sparrow’s chirps, a cardinal’s sweet melody, a dove’s gentle coo, and a robin’s robust declaration of his territory’s boundary. This spring was not silent because a voice wasn’t silent. A voice unafraid to fight the toxins destroying nature’s creatures.

The World’s Audience Is Drawn to the World’s Voice
Rachel Carson wasn’t silent. She spoke out about toxic pesticides. We’re God’s children and can’t be silent. We are to speak out against the toxins of the world seeking to destroy not nature’s winged creatures but men and women created by God.
We can no longer be silent. Jesus doesn’t want a silent spring.
Share your testimony of what you were before and what you’ve become now that you’re God’s child.
Speak the Truth of God’s Word to counter the toxic lies spewed by the world’s voices.
Don’t let the applause and cheers from the world’s massive audience keep you silent.
Don’t be silent when the world celebrates lifestyles in conflict with God’s intention for men and women.
Don’t be silent when mainstream media showcases speakers who openly blasphemy Christ and are cheered on by their audience.
Rachel Carson, faced powerful and influential voices. Their voices empowered by the chemical industry and the scientific foundations and government agencies that partnered with them.
God’s children face powerful and influential voices. Their voices empowered by the one that hates Jesus. But God’s children have a power greater than the power of the world’s children.
Speak up for Jesus. Don’t be silent. Spring is not silent!
