The observer spotted an ostrich on the African savanna burying its head in the sand and assumed the bird was attempting to hide. But its intent was to dig a hole for its eggs. This misinterpretation of the ostrich’s behavior hatched the phrase, “to bury one’s head in the sand” to describe a person hiding from something.
If this phrase misinterprets the behavior of an ostrich but correctly interprets the behavior of a person, we need to ask a question. Does this phrase describe me?
Since 2020 we’ve seen the world change. The changes and chaos can lead us to “bury our head in the sand.” We hide to pretend what’s going on around us isn’t really happening. We hide and hope everything will return to “normal.” We hide and dream that the chaos will pass and leave us untouched. We hide to be excused from taking action.
Don’t Hide from Jesus’ Revelation
Jesus said to His disciples before His death and resurrection, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33.
What if the disciples hid from Jesus’ revelation? What if the disciples buried their head in the sand?
They didn’t hide from Jesus’ revelation and we, today’s disciples, won’t hide from Jesus’ revelation either. Jesus told His disciples exactly what they needed to know and when they needed to know it. Jesus prepared them for what they would face.
In the same way, Jesus prepares us 2000 years later through His written revelation – the Bible.
It looks like this…
Jesus revealed to His disciples they would face persecution.
This was the third year Sarah had been meeting a group of women after dropping their kids off at school. But this year was different. These women knew she was a Christian and now made subtle comments about the intolerant and hateful Christians dividing today’s society.
Is Sarah surprised? No. The Bible reveals she will face persecution as a child of God.
Jesus revealed to His disciples they would receive the Holy Spirit.
Nora was pressured by peers to pass legislation in conflict with God’s Word. In the power of the Holy Spirit, she did not compromise her faith and voted against the legislation.
Is Nora surprised? No. The Bible reveals she’s born again in Spirit. Nora was prepared.
Jesus revealed to His disciples His mission as the Son of God.
Sophia watched a news clip of a high-profile Christian leader proclaiming that all religions are one because we worship the same god.
Is Sophia surprised? No. The Bible reveals that many will deny that Jesus is the Son of God and that we need a Savior.
These sisters stepped out for Christ because they were prepared by the revelations in the Bible.
Revelation Is In The Bible. No Surprises. Be Prepared.
We Pray
We pray to immerse ourselves in the Word so we’re prepared to be today’s disciples.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
LORD, thank You for Your Word. Thank You for revealing what we need to know as Your disciple. Thank You for warning us that in this world we will have trouble. Thank You for the peace and joy we have in You despite seeing evil unfold around us. Thank You for the written Word – the Bible.
Sometimes we want to hide from the chaos and confusion unfolding around us. We’re overwhelmed by a culture calling evil good and good evil. We want to hide from this!
The world rejoices when God’s children “bury their head in the sand.” If their head is buried in sand – they aren’t in God’s Word. What a victory it is for Satan when God’s children step back from serving You.
But Jesus, “told you these things” so we would be prepared. We have the knowledge that has been revealed by the Creator. We have been prepared by the Son of God – Jesus Christ.
We pray to stand strong for You, Jesus, and not hide.
Help us be disciplined to read, memorize and meditate on Scripture.
Help us hear Holy Spirit’s revelation of the message in Your Word.
Help us know Your Word so we can discern false prophecy and teachings.
Help us be prepared through Your Word to serve You in a world that doesn't recognize You.
Deepen our relationship with You because You are the Word.
In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
A Question for My Sisters
The time spent in God’s Word is eternal and prepares you to do His will.
When will you commit time to God’s Word?
